Smooth-coated Otter (Lutrogale perspicillata)

Interesting :

This specie of otter has smooth and glossy hair. Its tail tip is obviously flat. Its hair on the nose is straight. Mouth, cheek, and lower part of the neck, as well as upper part of the breast is yellow-white in color. Upper part of its body is dark-brown in color. The color of its lower part or the front side of its belly is lighter, which may be brown or gray in color. Its tail is very long. It is longer than half of it body together with its head. Its hands and feet are pale.

Habitat :

It is found in the middle part of India, Nepal, Sikkim, Myanmar, Thailand, Cambodia, Vietnam, Malaysia, Sumatra, and Borneo.

Food :

It eats fishes.

Behavior :

It can be found around creeks, watercourses, swamps, and other lowland with water, as well as any other water source with low level of water. It is not active when it is on ground. It stays in herd and help each other to catch fishes by chasing fishes to go upward. It chases fishes in a circle way to shallow area and eats such fishes.

Reproductive :

It normally breeds around the beginning of the year. Gestation period is around 63 days. Newborn otter opens its eyes when it is 10 days old. It weans when it is 3 months old. It is mature when it is 3 years old. In general, it gives first birth when it is 4 years old.
